Just Mal being Mal

Outside Public Restroom

Jersey City

MAL LED ME AWAY FROM the others, his voice quiet. He led me behind a thick belt of trees. He gestured for me to keep walking, but instead, I stopped.

“What?” I asked. “Here is fine.”

That seemed to agree with him. Mal practically slithered up to me, grinning like a cat who had taken a bunch of heroin. “He’s just so cute,” he said, snickering at some unvoiced thought. “Gabe, I mean. Just like a lost puppy, crossed with a lost kitten. But you made him real happy today, love. Haven’t seen him stop smiling since you two came back.”

“Thanks?” I wasn’t sure where was he going with this. Had he dragged me all the way out here just to say that? I doubted it. I felt my whole face heat up again, and I was acutely aware of all of Hell watching me. Don’t blush, don’t blush. “Okay. Yeah. It was…fun. So what?”

“So, I want a turn with him.” Mal mimed strangling something, even though he had a huge smile on his face. “So cute. So frustrating. But so cute. I hate him but I kinda like him too.” He slapped his right hand inside his left. “But the point is, I just wanted to make sure. I can fuck him, right?”

I would have loved to say I didn’t care, but I honestly kind of did. Maybe it was wrong of me to care. Maybe it wasn’t. Intellectually I wanted to think it was fine. Emotionally, though, I was less sure. “If he’s down with it,” I said, compromising with my own internal train of thought. There wasn’t a better answer I could give.

“Can I fuck you too, maybe?”

“If I’m down with it,” I said, also unclear on how to handle that one, too. Especially given what had just happened with Gabe. I’d had my chance, in a way. “But uhh, not right now. Like, I mean, there’s a huge monster out there. So…not right now.”

He laughed, shaking his head as though I’d told him something totally unbelievable. “Since when are you so concerned about consent?”

“Ever since the nephilim tried to take me out,” I said. And while it was true, it was also difficult. Difficult because…I wasn’t sure if that was true or not. Gabe’s words about change, and me changing, echoed in my mind.

The old me would never have worried about any of this stuff. But now I did. It was weird.

Mal stepped closer to me, and I noticed for the first time that I was having to look up at him, to look at his face. It took me a second to put the pieces together. “Wait,” I said, barely able to suppress a playful little giggle, the awkward sex discussion flying out of my brain.

He was taller.

“Are you serious?” I asked, giggling some more at the stupidity of it. “Holy shit.”

“What? About fucking you, love? Or fucking him? Definitely serious on both counts!”

I playfully put my hand on his chest, pushing Mal away.
